Make My Life A Bethlehem
What is the Advent announcement? For at least 1,700 years, Christ-followers have observed a season of prayer and preparation leading up to Christmas. We call this season ADVENT. In the busyness, craziness and chaos of the days that follow Black Friday, we Christ-followers try to do some soul searching, some praying and some repenting.
This Sunday we gather around the word from Luke 1:26-38. The angel Gabriel makes an announcement;
- Company is coming
- A baby will be born
- The Savior of the World is coming
- The king of the World will be born
Will there be room? Can we sweep out the clutter of our lives and leave space into which God might become a reality? What does it mean to pray, ‘Make my life a Bethlehem’? We need time to calm down, to wait, to get our house in order, to prepare, to wait for your deepest wish and most fervent desire, even if its hidden from yourself – for the birth of Jesus into your life.
This past week I picked up a book from my past, “MONEY, SEX AND POWER” by Richard Foster. What would it mean for Jesus to be born into our….
- relationship to money? Our check books, bank statements, and credit card records are a great indicator of our faith.
- relationship to sex? One of the most profitable industries in our culture is the pornography industry.
- relationship to power? How do we relate to one another? When Jesus is born in our life together we become comfortable with a towel and basin.
What’s the point? Jesus’ birth is not some romantic story that creates warm fuzzies and makes us feel good. It is offensive because it is all about saving us from ourselves! And only God can do that…..hope to see you Sunday so we can eavesdrop in on God’s conversation with Mary.
