How do you get Heartburn?

Central,

This Sunday our focus is SCRIPTURE ALONE! Our food will be Luke 24:13-32. It is the incredible and fascinating story that takes place on the first day of the week when Jesus was raised from the dead. This story has shaped the essence of the Christian narrative for over 20 centuries. On the road to Emmaus the church discovered how Jesus reveals himself as stranger, guest and host.

This was one of the first texts to help the Christian community understand how to interpret the scriptures. Luke writes, “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.”  And when the eyes of faith were opened they asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

Reflect for a few moments on some of Luther’s quotes regarding the Bible.

  • “The Bible is alive, it speaks to me; it has feet, it runs after me; it has hands, it lays hold of me.”
  • “No person understands the Scriptures, unless he or she be acquainted with the Cross.”
  • “Remove Christ from the Scriptures and there is nothing left.”
  • “Scripture is the manger in which we find the Christ Child.”

Our lives are a mist or vapor (James 4:13-15). We have a beginning and end but the Word of God is forever. May we join the disciples and turn to Jesus just as they did when Peter declared, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68)

I hope each of you are wrestling with the two questions that were posed to the body last Sunday. These questions will be at the heart of our gatherings during the UN LEARNING Church emphasis.

  1. Where do I need reform?
  2. Where do we, the body of Central need reform?

According to Jesus, we dare not seek to answer the 2nd question until we have wrestled with the 1st question. Jesus reminds us in a very clear and concise way that before we try to take out the speck from the eye of the other we need to remove the log from our own eye. I can’t speak about you but for me I am still learning how to take the log out.

Let’s be praying for God’s Spirit to freely move amongst us!

Paul

P.S. This Sunday our mission focus is our partnership with the Kibena and Matiganjola congregations in southern Tanzania! Come and check out our designer clothing from Tanzania. The Picture above is from our recent trip to Tanzania.
