What is child sponsorship?
Sponsoring a child through Central provides education, school uniforms, supplies and food for orphans and semi-orphans (children whose parents are not able to take care of them) in our sister congregations of Kibena and Matingajola in Southern Tanzania. This project is a partnership between Central Lutheran Church in Elk River, MN, and The Southern Diocese of Tanzania’s Lutheran Church (the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania).
What is the process?
You first select a student. You will be given a brochure that has information about the student and a picture. Some of the pictures and information are from information obtained in 2010 when they were interviewed, so your child will be older than the picture. No updates on your student are provided by Central Lutheran but you would be notified if your student leaves school or graduates. Payment for the support of that student’s academic needs are monthly; or, if you prefer, you may do a year at a time.
If you are interested, please contact Sharon Ellis at 763-241-9272 or at email@example.com. You may also contact the office at Central Lutheran and they will refer your name to Sharon. Bev Johnson shares duties with Sharon and is another person who can be contacted at 763-441-6429.
What is the cost?
Younger children are $30 per month and older students are $45 per month. This amount will provide support to educate a child in Southern Tanzania. If the full amount is more than you wish to contribute, arrangements can be made to share the cost of a student. Representatives from the Southern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania along with the Pastors and Elders from our sister congregations of Kibena and Matiganjola oversee the distribution of funds to ensure that 100% of your support is providing education for the children.
How do I pay?
eGiving is the most reliable and easiest means to cover each month payment. To participate in eGiving, you sign a form and give either your checking account number or a credit card and the exact amount will be taken out at the time you specify each month. However, checks written to Central Lutheran (in memo put Tanzania Sponsorship) or cash can be placed in your monthly church giving envelope. If you would like to pay the entire year at one time, it is recommended that you do that at the end of December or the first of January for the coming year.
What is the duration of sponsorship?
One year minimum. Many choose to sponsor their child through his/her school career into college. Any duration is welcome, but it is your responsibility to let either Sharon Ellis or Kris Geslin know that you wish to end your commitment. When students graduate or leave school, you will be notified and given the option of dropping out of the program or sponsoring a new student.
Can I have contact with my student?
Letters and packages can be mailed to your student, but packages are expensive to mail and delivery is unreliable. At the end of November and early December, a table is set up in the church lobby to collect money for Christmas gifts for students. The recommended amount is $5 / $10 / $15 or $20. Some people have donated so that all the children can get a little gift. Occasionally letters come to the church from the students to their sponsors. A table is set up in the lobby for people to pick up these letters. The addresses you use to mail letters to students are as follows:
