Dear Sisters in Christ,
Thank you to Pat Hackman for our devotional this week on Philippians 3:1-14.
This summer as we study Philippians we have been learning how to move from stuck to forward. As we read through these verses there is an overarching message of ‘rejoicing’ or ‘joy’. These words can actually be found 16 times as we read through the four chapters of Philippians.
Chapter 3 leads off with “Finally my brothers, rejoice in the Lord!” (3:1). The dictionary defines Rejoice as a verb meaning to give or receive joy. The dictionary defines Joy as a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. Hmm. The dictionary committee must have failed to read Philippians before they posted that one.
You see, happiness is often mistaken for joy, but they are definitely not the same thing. Joy comes from within, it is knowing and trusting God. Joy is ever lasting, we can have joy in spite of our problems and circumstances. Happiness is external. It comes as a result of pleasant conditions or situations. It is temporary and based on what happens to us.
Paul could rejoice because he didn’t rely on his circumstances for joy, he knew and trusted God in his heart. That was something no one could take away from him.
How do we move forward when we are feeling stuck? Be joyful in all circumstances. Rejoice in the Lord!
Lord, Fill my heart and life with joy and let me remember it in all circumstances. Praise be to you. Amen

Central Women’s next book discussion will be on Tuesday, August 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Elk River Activity Center to talk about Britt-Marie was Here by Fredrik Backman. It is a heartwarming story about a socially awkward, fussy busybody Swedish woman who walks out on her cheating husband. She finds a job as a caretaker in a decrepit recreation center in a backwater town full of misfits, drunkards, and layabouts. Somehow she ends up coaching a supremely untalented children’s soccer team to victory. While it is a quirky and entertaining story, there is much to be learned from it. The books are already in the church office and at Holy Grounds on Sunday mornings. They are $10.00 each. All women are welcome and to bring a friend.
And if you like series of books, Central’s library has one that you will enjoy. We have 8 in the series of the Yada Prayer Group by Neta Jackson which are about a mismatched diverse group of women who are often called to be out of their comfort zone. The books are humorous and light, but deal with real issues faced by women today. They do not need to be read in order to be enjoyed and they are on a shelf in the middle of the library right above the check-out system.
