Dear Sisters in Christ,
Thank you to Roberta Takle for our devotional this week.
To understand this section of Philippians we need to start with 3:14, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Then verse 15a says, “All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things.” (NIV) Thinking of these verses and on through the end of chapter 3 left me full of questions:
- Are we mature?
- Are we listening to God?
- Are we allowing God to guide us in thinking differently than the world around us?
- Do we live up to what we have already attained?
- Are we standing up to the enemies of the cross of Christ?
- Are we standing up to the ones whose minds are on earthly things?
In the ego-centric world we live in, these questions are often difficult to answer the way Christ would want us to answer. BUT, Paul reminds us that our citizenship is in heaven and we are to eagerly await our Savior, Jesus Christ, who will transform us as we live for him here on earth and when we join him in heaven, where we will receive a glorious body like his.
Lord, thank you for being with us when we are faced with difficult questions and hard things put in front of us in the world in which we live. Guide us to always press toward the goal of life living for you here on earth and toward life in heaven when our journey on earth ends.
In Christ’s name, Amen.

Central Women’s next book discussion will be on Tuesday, August 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Elk River Activity Center to talk about Britt-Marie was Here by Fredrik Backman. It is a heartwarming story about a socially awkward, fussy busybody Swedish woman who walks out on her cheating husband. She finds a job as a caretaker in a decrepit recreation center in a backwater town full of misfits, drunkards, and layabouts. Somehow she ends up coaching a supremely untalented children’s soccer team to victory. While it is a quirky and entertaining story, there is much to be learned from it. The books are already in the church office and at Holy Grounds on Sunday mornings. They are $10.00 each. All women are welcome and to bring a friend.
And if you like series of books, Central’s library has one that you will enjoy. We have 8 in the series of the Yada Prayer Group by Neta Jackson which are about a mismatched diverse group of women who are often called to be out of their comfort zone. The books are humorous and light, but deal with real issues faced by women today. They do not need to be read in order to be enjoyed and they are on a shelf in the middle of the library right above the check-out system.
